Hello

I think of you, of what you are going through in this period of confinement. as I think about the stillness, this planetary sharing of a crisis situation. How is it going with you? how are you spending this singular time? Artist, is it a time to relax, to reflect? Are you on the contrary in a (new?) Production phase?

I’m curious to know if this period affects your imagination? If the crisis is an inspiration? How do you react artistically to our uncertain future? More generally, how do you see the artist’s contribution to solving the crises that are shaking the planet? Will we be different once the effects of the health crisis have dissipated? I hope you have time (!!!!) to answer me. I have time to read you.

Love you. Take care

Hi Eric, How are you doing with the quarantine? And in general?

I wasn’t feeling very well this past month but I am with more energy and a bit of inspiration now, a lot of reflecting and experimenting in my studio. For the music program, are you thinking sometime soon, or in the far off future? I will let you know if any space comes to mind.  I hope you are doing well, despite all this uncertainty.

Dear Jen Reimer

I hope all is well on your side

Sorry for my silence: we were in the south on a desert island and no one told us there would be no internet. Back, and in confinement, I resume, tanned, work (!!!!): it feels good (!)

We need to develop new frameworks for creation and distribution. There are about ten proposals on my table so far, which is good for a series. Radio transmission is for sure one key of communication, old technology, new application.

Have you developped on that idea of Micro FM Radio? Is that Live, on the Internet. I have great connexions with Internet Radios, this could be a match for one part of transmitting…

I would like to apply to CALQ for this project before the end of the year, if possible the next few weeks.

It would be necessary to define in a paragraph the mandate that you give yourself, present the mode of creation then distribution, send me a brief budget (that I would study, that we would confirm), a CV and links to similar works if possible ( here it will not be possible but audio ?, a sketch?)

Hoping to hear from you, know that I am going, filled with happiness after our stay under the coconut trees, to put my energy in the next few days to this project.

Hello Eric,

Since the beginning of COVID, and being quarantined at home, I’ve been listening to the so-called ‘silence’ of my surroundings and discovering the depth of sound it contains. I’ve been spending a lot of time listening to the sound of the rooms in my home; outside my window and walking to more desolate places along the tracks to listen and record. As I listen attentively to my surroundings, seemingly static noises and tones reveal themselves to be rich and complex, a network of frequencies and overtones.  Through this practise of embodied listening, I am more connected to the spaces I inhabit, I am more present. I propose to create a performance in a reverberant space (a tunnel for instance). The performance will emerge from silence, and grow in response to the surrounding acoustic environment into a massive sound, an accumulation of resonances. The composition will be generated on site with field recordings collected from inside the space, live recording and live processing in pure data. Due to the intimate nature of the performance, and COVID restrictions considered, I imagine only a few people there at a time to experience it, perhaps it could happen over a longer duration so that small groups can come and go.

Dear Eric… see below my answers underlined…

Q0: what is the title of your talk, broadcast?

The title of my project is The loudest tone but I might think of another name for this event because I am using it for my other grant proposals.

October, 2021-November, 2021 at night

Q2: What will be the duration of this work, intervention?

Q3: If this is the case, would you like your final sound work to be broadcast either live or recorded on an Internet radio network?

Recorded on site and then streamed on internet radio network

Q4: before this broadcast, would you agree to a short interview on the subjects discussed here.

Sure

In order not to disappoint anyone, when we get the answers, I would need to know

QB1: what minimum fees do you want to obtain?

$1500

QB2: do you pay taxes? Tax numbers?

No tax number

QB3: Please give me the list of extra costs: employees, gear, rentals, impressions, posts and others…

$200 for rental of speakers (it will probably be less)

QB4: if necessary: travel and accommodation costs?

Don’t leave anything out. Also know that if YOU take on certain expenses, or certain tasks, these can be recorded and appear in the budget as "Personal contribution of the artists". I do this for myself.

When will you be sending me the docs, in word, separated, please: CV, Bio, Letter of Interest (2nd page will be or can be your Long version of your project) and Link(s) to previous project.. My position into this series is I can for sure be present, when desired and when possible, if possible. More surely, I will be working at distance as an assistant and an ear, when needed, communicating back and north, to be sure things happen well, 2 a Documentation is done properly, 3- managing the diffusion part,

4-managing the streaming online of interviews and works, during a 3-day program later, at end, on Martin Streaming Server, thru a network of autonomous web radios.

What expenses did you apply for me in your CALQ application? Was it only for honoraria and equipment rental?

I will apply to CALQ to the Research & Exploration category (not Creation!) to help cover the rest of my project expenses. I spoke with André at CALQ who told me it won’t be a problem at all because they are different projects. I Just want to make sure the expenses don’t overlap.

Follow your initial project proposal.  Do you want to check if this is still the project to be carried out, is its title still relevant, and confirm the dates?

Budget, I have an almost balanced budget, in relation to the amount obtained, which gives in the current state:

a departure fee of 1250. This is for being IN, everyone gets it.

150, to make it all as you wanted

a fee of $ 150 + Taxes for a short distance interview with me.

A fee of 150$ for an assistant

50$ for transportation

Then keep the bills. For now, there can be no budgeted events, but if you have to, I have a little personal cushion of $ in case of deseperate needs.

There is also always the hope of receiving a grant from the CAC,in which case we will adjust in particular for the Internet radio-Internet broadcasting part.

We can communicate at any time and think of traces to inform our auditors and for dissemination. I will need this to put the 14 projects together into one set.

Please communicate with me, and participate in this project with the following artists:

Camille Bernard-Gravel

Caroline Gagné

Daniel Canty

Émilie Payeur

Éric Normand

Félix-Antoine Morin

Ida Toninato

Jen Reimer

Martin Rodriguez

Mathieu P. Lapierre

Nady Larchet

My project:

The Loudest Tone is a project that explores the complexity of silence through a methodology of embodied listening, field recording and audio processing in Pure Data. I propose to develop an improvised performance and audio work in a remote reverberant space in Montréal (TBA). The performance will emerge from the silence of the space and grow in response to the surrounding acoustic environment into a massive sound. The composition will be generated on site with field recordings and microphones placed strategically around the space and live processing in Pure Data. I will develop programming in Pd to generate music that responds to the environment in real time. I will shape the sounds through bringing out certain tones, frequencies and textures that accumulate over time. The performance will be amplified via 2-4 portable battery-powered PA speakers. Due to the remote and intimate nature of the performance, only a few people will gather on site. It will be recorded and streamed online as a way to share with a wider audience.

I will re-write the text, but the project is more or less the same idea, and the title is still relevant for now. Also, I Just want to clarify that the CALQ funding I received is for a different project (not related to the Manual project). Anyway, I have already started on my project, and I will attach my invoice to this email. I am still aiming for a November presentation (a recorded audio work and depending on accessibility, an intimate performance). I plan on re-writing the project description… Is my project a part of the CAC funding? Or Just the CALQ?

Hi Eric! I’ve been thinking about this – I like the idea of composing 1 more audio work and then eventually releasing it – but I don’t think a vinyl could be finished in time for this exhibit. Many manufacturers are taking 6 months to make an LP right now.  For the box idea: I could get a very limited-edition CD made that includes photos, and I could hire my friend to help design it. I think this kind of object could be finished in time for the exhibit. What do you think? I do like the idea of having an object rather than putting the audio work on a USB key, but I am open to other ideas you may have… For the event: I could hang a photo/poster, I’m also considering performing the piece live… or, simply amplifying the piece. We can talk more about this after I return from my trip after July1. I hope you are having a good trip…

Hi Jen. Just a resume of what’s coming: We have started to talk about a CD release. Have you developed on that issue: jacket layout, graphic design, number of copies, pressing company etc.… I Just contacted again a friend and printer with whom I liked to work. I am awaiting his answer if he is still available to work with me.

> If we work that way, would be great to start asap… The audio track will be part of a listing of Manual tracks which will be played at Produit Rien from Sept 6 to 12 (11!), not sure exactly yet about the sound system (headphones or room?) Will you be around? Would you like to make a presentation, an audio diffusion, or be part of a kind of friendly panel? The audio track will also be accessed thru a headphone Jack on a Raspberry Pi installed in a knitting box I bought which I see as our travelling Manual. I am thinking about Printed Cards for each project with links to the Internet files. Maybe also a 6×9 poster of some dimensions I must think about. Is that OK with you? A diffusion fee will be available, amount will be determined by the various interventions each artist may do these days. All the best to you. Keep me updated on your project.

Hi Eric, nice to hear from you! I am Just settling back from my trip to Zurich. Regarding the exhibition – a poster sounds great and listening to the work on headphones would work well. I could also be into a panel or talk. I will also consider the idea to perform the work/ perhaps a durational installation of different recordings, etc. I will get back to you about this ASAP. I really want to make a release, but I am a bit worried about the timeline because I’d like to add another piece. If we were to produce a CD before the Manual event – when would be the deadline to submit all materials for manufacturing? Let’s have a coffee or wine? I am back on the wine right now. Hope you’re well and looking forward to more discussions.

Would it be impossible to get it for sept 6th, we could think on displaying the files, the layout etc., on site. As we talked. I am in contact with a printer (digital) who can do the prints quite fast.

Hey Eric, I could do a kind of durational installation of sounds and music composed from the tunnel. I made an interface for all the recordings so it could be interesting to improvise with this. The paradox here is: you can’t do 50 CDS, it then must be CDrs. This is not expensive. Few dollars each with Black Texts or graphic on silver surface. Can’t be fully black then. But Jackets can depend on what you desire. This is the key question: what kind of Jacket you want. At end if all is customs, with graphic honorariums of 400 it will be an expensive release.

Hi Eric, I liked the black sleeves you showed me the other day. A simple black sleeve is great, and the designer has this in mind. But it would be helpful to know how much is in your budget so I can plan around it. How much do you think is feasible for the graphic design honoraria in your experience?

Jen, numbers are turning round and round.

This is not a question of what I can afford in the budget. It is first what you intend to do graphically, number of hours put into it etc., same things for cd vs Cdr. Once I know exactly what you intend to do, we can search for numbers.

so far collaborators to any other Manual projects have been paid 300 dollars, may I say their contribution was much more than a so simple design or a 4 »5 x4 »5 Jacket recto verso. For the Jacket, I would like to print at ADC, where I will print the postcards and posters. It can be more complicated. than my simple Jacket which is now assembled not printable. ADC can print and assemble more complicated Jackets or re-do this one with your design. So far, all I know. CDR of 50 copies

Printed text or graphic Black on Silver (may not be masses of black but lines, texts…) Simple Black simple Jacket: 50 copies. Graphic design: your graphic designer. 300 I must add some info’s will have to be on the Jacket: if produced by that grant, it should be mentioned Manual for a New Neighborhood, and ORAL with a number to include it on ORAL_records. Normally it should have the CAC logo, but we can forget i. I guess

Hi Eric, Ok cool, sounds good thanks! I think the designer will also include an insert or poster perhaps, I think $300 is fair. We can add the CAC logo too. I think we should probably print on new Jackets so the logos and text can be part of the design.

Hi Eric! Regarding the cost, I think part of the serious expense might be the different paper. Newsprint comes in broadsheet format and should be incredibly cheap as the paper is quite low quality…. I based my design off an existing design which is double sided and has a dark print on one side. Image below for reference! There is some visibility of the print through the page but not too much. Maybe François knows a printer that can print newsprint? I’d rather not reformat the design, but if I have to I will. I think it should be possible to get this kind of job done under that cost… I’ll ask around and get back to you!

PS-Ideally, I’d like to have the digital and CD released all at once. If your plan is to start a page that can be edited with the CD and digital info later then I can send you the details to put inside of it!

would be good to be #90 as I Just uploaded some data files for Barbara

if you are OK with it, I need to do it today so I can have that link to it and post it to François to get clear QRs codes. Then once posted, you may correct it, as you want… will do this this Pm as I do leave to work with Thomas on the BOX…

Hi Eric, I see it is possible to publish a private release, so people are not notified once it’s posted. Is it possible for you? If it doesn’t work, I would prefer to wait until all materials are ready before releasing it publicly. Another option – if the private release setting doesn’t work for you, could the QR code on the back of my postcard direct people to the ORAL Bandcamp site as a whole? And then once it’s released people will see it there…

I am almost finished preparing the Bandcamp info’s, and can send them to you soon…

Hi Eric, ok I am glad it is private. Could you use the information below? And we will re-check it before the release! Magnus and I are looking into other options – and we might have found an alternative. Just waiting to hear back from the printer! I’ll keep you in the loop. Title: The Loudest Tone, Jen Reimer

Could you use the black and white poster image that Magnus sent as the album photo for now? Description:

Oral Records presents the first instalment of Jen Reimer‘s ongoing project "The Loudest Tone". This recording is a document of a live performance in a subterranean tunnel in Tiohtia:ke/Montreal–a woven composition of field recordings, subsonic vibrations and resonant tones recorded in the same tunnel June 2021-April 2022.

Thank you Nuc, Kara Keith, Travis West, Magnus Tiesenhausen, Max Stein, Nancy Wright, Eric Mattson and matralab for your collaboration and support.

I’d like to use Just the black image for all the cover art for now.

And the entire poster with text/info we can include as CD art documentation. Or I will make a high-quality image for this because this image is low quality.

Can you change it to the black poster for now? Thanks!

Hi Eric, we have an update. I am in contact with NewspaperClub. Max and I printed with them in 2016 and they did a great job. They can print exactly what we need, and it can be shipped in time, but I will need to place the order by tomorrow for it to arrive before September 1. As soon as we upload the artwork to their site, I will receive an invoice for the total cost including shipping. They are quoting 140 GBP which is equivalent to $220 CAD including shipping. I can pay for it and invoice you afterward.

Let us know what you think! And, changing the release number on the CD & poster design will require a lot of work, so it would be great if you could change Barbara’s release number instead. Thanks! Jen Reimer

Can you provide me with the images in good def of what you think would fit a 4.65×6.5 postcard then a 11×17 poster (of some sort)

Hi Eric,

For the postcard, you could use the black tunnel image I sent you in the earlier email. Re-attaching it below. For the poster, it would be great if we could hang the album art poster on the wall. I can order an additional print from Newspaperclub for this. Let me know what you think,

Thanks!

Hi Eric, Newspaper club is sending me the prints flat (not folded) so we can use it as a poster in the space.  I would prefer to hang the newspaper album artwork in the space because it is designed as a poster (15" x 20") and would relate to the CD in the Manual box. But if you need something 11 x 17" then you can print the black image attached (same as postcard) to hang in the space.

I will work on the CD master.

Thanks!
