Hey! Interested. Thank you for thinking of
me. Hope you’re doing okay. Here is a project I submitted for funding here
in Saskatoon. I think it fits nicely within your prompt.
The Year I Floated In Space is a year-long, process-oriented,
multimedia project involving sound, video and text. It is a site-specific
project; a study of natural conditions (light, wind, temperature, humidity…)
surrounding the house I am living in and the yard it is built upon and how
these will serve as environmental controls for creating new audio and video
works. This project brings together two critical conditions for me. 1)
After my first year in Saskatoon I intend to devote time and energy to an
intensive investigation of the specific site I am living within, to come to
know it better and acquaint myself to this new space through the context of art
production and dissemination, and 2) during the challenging times of COVID-19, working within a framework that
allows me to make new work, gain some new skills while remaining within
recommended, and changing, safety guidelines in response to the pandemic. I imagine
this project to be a Do-It-Yourself response to making work in these
conditions. It reflects my punk rock roots, and seems to embrace a local,
get-it-done spirit of living on the prairies, of self-sufficiency and
improvisation. The project is comprised of video and sound works made
from, or influenced by, these shifting environmental conditions through each
season. Experimental techniques will be used with more traditional audio and
video production approaches. For example, contact microphones and geophones
(vibration sensors) will be attached to the structure of the house to record
vibration as sound, a VLF (very low frequency) antenna will collect
electromagnetic and natural radio signals passing through the yard, weather
data will be used to control equalizers and compressors to process the sound
and video, time lapse photography will document changing light conditions and
movement, 8mm film will document texture, surface, light, shadow and color. All
this material will be processed further in post-production with analogue and
digital processes. Finally, a daily text piece will be written which may be
poetic, descriptive, or essay-like resulting in 356 short text pieces. In
addition to the site study and production of new works, I will also embark on a
more theoretical adjacent project of researching the history of sensing
technologies and scientific method to the history of global capitalism. When
and where did we, in the European tradition, come to doubt our bodies so
thoroughly? I am curious to unpack some of the ideas of how scientific method
and sensing technologies are tied to a Western conception of relying on
external data, validation and verification to be able to phenomenologically
know a place. While much media art is activated as a sort of celebration of
technological wonders, expensive and elite, my project will queer this
perspective and consider technologies as being the result of a lack, a missing,
wounded or ignored sensorium more than simply a celebration of technologies.
While this does begin to point towards more holistic Indigenous world views the
world over, the more theoretical component of my project is a critique of
Western/European world views and not from an Indigenous perspective I cannot
know. This is from within, using the tools of Western scientific method as
self-criticism. I imagine this present state for settler culture as a crisis,
the crisis of global capitalism, the ongoing effects of colonialization, and
its resultant self-alienation. This query will take the form of combining a
banality (daily weather notations) and a poetics, not dry, faux scientific
neutrality. For 12 months I will recreate my home as an environmentally
sensitive production studio where I create sound, video, and text works based on
objects, materials, situations, events in and around the domestic space and its
yard. As the project begins to accumulate material, installations/performances
will take place on site. To do this I will employ radio antennas for collecting
AM, FM and VLF frequencies, temperature, humidity, wind, light and vibration
sensors for this specific location as means of collecting environmental data to
influence sound and video processing and playback. Combined with this more
technological method of working, I will also keep a more personal written
‘journal’ that sits in relation to the ‘listening station’. This journal will
be a combination of weather-related entries and personal responses modelled
after the journals kept by those posted in stations in isolated locations, at
sea or in space. In contrast to colonizing outposts, and their expansion
of empire, The Year I Floated In Space will behave as a questioning of
colonial legacy rather than re-enacting imperial methods of the past. These
writing experiments will touch upon themes that may seem counter to the
rational, scientific method and relate more to this idea of ‘floating’; of
literally floating in space on the planet but at the same time floating in the
sense of being in-between-time, of being in a state of limbo, of waiting and
watching, untethered from e structures we know, but not yet fully
released. Decidedly not moving forward, of being in stasis, static hum
ghosts and fog, blurred edges and abstract sounds and images attempting to
refigure the moment as somehow knowable at all. With this project, writing
will be an integral component from beginning to end resulting in 356 new text
pieces. I imagine the current state for many of us as a result of this
over-reliance on a supposed “neutral” European scientific method that is, structured
by ideology and world view and COVID-19 itself. It is a worsening
situation due to international markets, the free trade of goods, international
travel and shipping, and unbridled capitalism. A recent book by author, Shane McCorristine, has
influenced this more theoretical aspect of the project. In The Spectral Arctic: A History of Dreams & Ghosts in Polar
Exploration,
Shane McCorristine, unpacks the inconsistencies of an ideal European scientific
method and outlines many of the myths and spiritualist tendencies amongst
explorers and crews working in the Arctic. Far from a purely ‘rational’ and
science-based outlook, explorers and crew members were as driven by ideas of
spirits, ghosts and other spectral entities as the Indigenous populations they
were actively exploiting and colonizing. My interest in what the European body
is missing, my body and its exiled sensibilities that has prompted its reliance
on sensing and mediating technologies is the story I wish to further
extrapolate in the project. My work is about listening. This project is
also that although it will extend my listening capabilities further. In this
sense it is a new way of working connected to past methods. This project
extends my normal methods of listening (ears and body) to include information
beyond my normal sensory capacities; sound frequencies above and below and
micro-environmental shifts beyond my capability to perceive. My work
listens to thresholds and boundaries. This project exists as a method of
exploring these boundaries, imaging and feeling through the territories I occupy
and acknowledging how far I extend into space and place. My larger projects are
often thematically based on a body of research. This project follows the same
methodology. Areas of research will include sensor technologies, sonification
of data sets and vibrational matter. Over the course of the year, I will
consolidate a more thorough working knowledge of sensing technologies and to
more organically incorporate them into my practice. To assemble an audio-visual
body of material for installation, release and performance. To create a body of
research to make this work and carry it, and associative works, forward.

Sadie
is fine with everything. She’s just easy going and kind (except to cats!... but
maybe that’s even different now too…), Ari is suspicious that this new creature
will receive some of her attention so that is a slight issue now but every day
she opens up a little. It will be fine. We invited Addie in so we would have
some transition from when Sadie may head over to the happy hunting grounds. For
now, she seems very happy and healthy. So, all good on that front. I got
the grant for a project called, The Accursed Sound. It’s one of the components
of the composite I didn’t get. It’s basically a sound and video installation,
vinyl record (why do a project without one?!), and possible performance
ensemble positing that cymbals, made from copper alloy, is the sound of hell. The
video content will be from stock industrial video from open pit copper mining
and microscopic video of vinyl grooves and cymbals with text excerpts
literature, geology, seismology, electromagnetic, occult and metallurgic
sources, and colonial and anti-colonial texts…sound will all be from cymbals
played and processed by hand and MIDI drivers…the record will be a 1xLP with a
book of images from the project.
From
the grant (for more info if you’re interested):
A demo video
for the grant:
https://vimeo.com/466016336
pw: curse
“The
project is a speculative story-telling of the sound of hell through the musical
percussion instrument of the cymbal; made of copper alloy. In this sense it is
a horror story...
...The
horror of this story comes from the material’s (raw copper into cymbal)
provenance as molten liquid oozed out and upward under extreme pressure over
millennia, then stilled in great deposits near the Earth’s surface to be
extracted through the violence of industry, capital and colonialism. The
Accursed Sound posits that the sound of a cymbal is inherently cursed…
...The
project considers the open pit copper mine, whose form is a combination of
spiral (for transportation) and concentric layers of extraction, the concentric
rings in a musical cymbal, the spiraling grooves of the vinyl record and
Dante’s layers of Hell in Inferno as an interconnected topography. The accursed
sound refigures these actualities as a natural and imagined feedback system
whose very formation is surrounded by noise - from the rumbling magma where
copper, the primary material in cymbals and the coating used to make vinyl
masters for production, and the industrial noise of extraction industries that
have also produced a hell-ish landscape. The Earth’s depths have long held
connections to imaginations of Hell and its fiery inferno. Along its journey to
the surface, copper passes through seismic events as large scale, very low
frequency vibration, where geomagnetic forces also act on the planet. In the
end, it would seem quite likely that this material, in the form here of a
cymbal, could only result in a doom-soaked atonality - the crash of a cymbal
(Dante’s anti-music) with its register sound of white noise splashing from its
edge and surface. It is no wonder cymbals were used by soldiers in ancient
times to harness a roar to install fear in their opponents. In some cymbals,
it’s true, we find a tone that still rings on after the noise fades as a
sparkling tone that has in some way escaped this fate. Almost ‘pure’ like a
sine wave that has literally rung itself free of its former noise. This tone
itself a product of the cymbal’s rings that radiate its sound outwards;
tighter, more concentric grooves result in a more focused sound. The spiral
also is held in the grooves cut into a vinyl record where the turntable’s
stylus follows the left and right stereo path of its valley..."

Hi, Just
a quick response to this, for now. The intention of my house project (The Year I Floated In Space), is that the house itself is the
site of production and exhibition. So, my original plan was not for this
material to leave this site as an exhibition or in a gallery somewhere else.
But as part of the exhibition plan here, I was going to do about 3
“performances” from the house where I would transmit sound/music from my radio
transmitter and project video out the windows. In a way it is simply an
exhibition for my neighbours. So, the work will include a series of
“ambient” video and sound works. What I could imagine contributing to
your project would be the creative documentation of these performances. So in a
sense I will be shooting video of the house performing that could in turn be
another kind of work. Maybe this is of interest for your project? It
could be a streamed video or sound only contribution. Another idea would
be to do a live streamed audio performance of field recordings of the house
that I will be gathering as part of the house project. But this is less
neighbourly focused. Happy to talk about this more. Thanks for
considering my work and this invitation.

the main project is about our new ways of thinking about neighborhood (and

communicate one's work to others, near and far. I am offering you a salary of
$1250 Canadian for this unique project, plus money for assistants, for example
to get quality documentation. Can you send me a short description of your
contribution, especially if some aspects have changed? The first payment will
be made when you tell me that you have started the creative work. For any
production payment, I will need your invoices or your assistant's invoices (if
applicable), with your name and address. Part of my budget is also intended to
launch an Internet radio station. The important thing for me is to be able to
follow the development of the project from a distance, to collect information
about the creative process and audiovisual documentation, but also in the form
of texts, stories or poems to present to my own audience, on my blog, on social
networks, the different artistic directions taken by the 18 participants. And
finally, to put it all together in the form of a Manual for a new neighborhood. Also. Some artists finish their work with an
object or a print. In this case, if you can keep at least one copy, it is
possible, in agreement with the artist and knowing the costs, to contribute to
the production. In the case of compositions or digital works, I would also like
to have a copy of the work produced. Any other distribution or use of the work
must also be agreed upon with the artist. Or if you prefer not to receive an
honorarium for your contribution to Handbook for a New Neighbourhood, I can
keep the money and use it to come to Saskatoon for a beer! Ciao from hot

Hi Eric, all sounds good. Thanks for
your continued interest in my work, it’s very much appreciated. I have started
the creative work which to date consists of mostly time lapse videos and a
super 8 film. In the end the work will consist of sound/music, digital images
and prints, videos and super 8 films, and a sculptural VLF antenna. There will
also likely be some text produced although at this point I’m not sure what it
will be. Maybe a short story/prose piece based on the title, The Year I Floated In Space. I will send a more formal
description tomorrow. But basically in the mean time, the project is still to
make a body of work including sound, moving image, print images (photos,
stills), and text abstractions of the home and plot of land we live
on. Here’s some of the support material for the grant application if
useful as a reminder. It seems the work is becoming much more abstract as I go
and will likely continue that way.
https://vimeo.com/464034215/d3aced0e68 I’ll send a more formal description
tomorrow. I can send work as it develops for you to follow. For
production, this body of work is covered by my Sask Arts Board grant, so I won’t
need any money for production or documentation - so why not use that money to
come to Saskatoon for a beer! (But the artist fee would be handy for me to
have…). Below is the heartbreaker. I have been fascinated by this dead tree in
the boulevard of our side street. It is dead but somehow at night it seemed to
be living in some way. Like it came to life at night and then returned to death
at sunrise. I had plans to photograph it framed like the image on the left, but
with my camera, not this test iPhone shot. A couple weeks ago, I heard motors
and noise outside my studio and realized the city was cutting the tree down and
I missed my chance to photograph it properly. I wanted to give up this project
at that moment. The image on the right is the same space without the tree. I named
the tree “Ghillie” which is the same of the camouflage suits snipers wear to
look like bushes. So here, instead the tree was camouflaging itself to become
human. A tree that only came to life at night.

topic. This could be a thoughtful text or just a list of quick thoughts. This
compilation will be used, among other things, to frame your documentations or
my presentations of the Manual for a new neighborhood project. Here is: Since March 2020,
our relationships to the world at large, to others, have been in turmoil, I believe.
Today, while the risks of a pandemic are not extinguished, we have different
ties with our neighborhood, our place of life (city, village, region); even our
daily life in our own home has taken a different turn. Our communications and
emotional ties with others, our friends, our relatives, the shopkeepers in our
neighborhood, our family are either damaged or modified. Let's imagine that this
stop. What will happen then? How do you envisage the evolution of your links
with others soon? Will your neighborhood, but also your friendships, your
emotional relationships be changed forever? Will our being-in-the-world be, in
your opinion, different? Thank you. Any communication on this subject from you
will be treated with the utmost discretion.

Because
this work is so site-specific, maybe there’s something I can do for Manual
that is more like a “fake documentary” of the project. Some kind of single
channel video and sound work that tells the story of the project using the
original material and documentation to bring the material together as a story
with poetics and narration. Like a doc about a lost weather station or
something. Let me think on this and maybe we can meet when you return to

expressed your opinion on this idea, let me know your intention or NOT to participate
- it is important for us to know who will play this game remote broadcast
or NOT)
2.
The idea shared by some (not all or all, same thing as in point 1. Let me know
your decision to participate) of depositing objects, reflections, audios,
videos in a package, which will be transmitted door to door by post. I'm
thinking of a two-week stay in Montreal, where Manuel would occupy PRODUCED
RIEN according to terms that we could discuss : rotating exhibition,
broadcasting on headphones and above all meetings to be programmed.
Your trip to Montreal would be assured, accommodation too, unless you have
an address where to stay. These meetings with a SMALL audience would be an
opportunity to bring together all your voices in one place, thus putting an end
to my remote curating. There will be availability soon but let’s not
increase our stress…. I am thinking of the end of June, the beginning of July:
June 28 to July 12. This could be before, of course, but also after until
September 11. What do you think?

the results of CAC. But I might be in Montréal in June recording next Black Seas.
I will also be in Gatineau in August at a residency at Daïmon. I am happy to

Hey,

For
my contribution to Manual: I am recording a live house
concert this weekend. One 30-minute session in the day and one in the evening.
I will also broadcast it on my radio transmitter to the homes around me and
incorporate this as a feedback signal again. I will send you the recordings
once I mix them (the following week). Maybe this can be an ORAL Bandcamp? I
WILL BE IN MONTREAL for the dates for Produit Rien!!! I’m in town recording the
next Black Seas record July 29 -August 6, then at Daïmon from August 8-Sept 1
and then back to play a show with Elizabeth at Michaela’s Cinémathèque
Québecoise exhibition on Sept. 2. So, I will be in town again from Sept. 2
until about Sept. 6-7. I’m available to do something at PN any time after Sept.
2 until maybe the 6th or 7th. Could play a set, do radio or just be around. I will
be able to contribute work to the exhibition in the form of sound, video,
projection, print/photograph(s), and even a jar of soil from the yard. Maybe I can
get Jake to send some raspberries to us from our garden!... Have a great trip.
(When you’re down there, think about who that might be there could work with us

Not
really although they were made at home in my neighborhood! So, in that sense,
okay. But some of them are from my new record which I will send off to be
pressed this week. The noisier tracks are from a drum machine session. I wasn’t
sure if your radio project was neighborhood specific or not. So, if it is,
these files may not be best to use. If you’re making a broader, non-neighborhood

Hey, maybe
this is a related but not integral to my “normal” contributions to Manual?
As in, many artists move around a lot to be able to work…so in this way, an
artist’s neighbourhood often shifts and moves around related to work. In this
case, I’m on Tinos, my “residence” is in the village of “Kardiani”. Also, I am
working in the quarries of Koumelas the next 3 weeks and will be there every
day. You would love it. It’s like the Anthropocene was 20 years ago. I can
imagine making field recording programs of the quarries no problem. There is
already an internet radio station operated by Jacob Moe, the director of the
Styros Film Festival, connected to this project that I’m contributing to so
some of the material could overlap. I will be on Tinos until May 23 and
then will go to Athens and work with Nikos and Ilios again until May
31. Maybe this doesn’t fit your idea. No problem if so. I just like these
conversations with you. I hope you are well. I wish you were here working
with me! Marc-Alexandre is in Iceland, and it would be good if we could all be
here together.

Hey,
for the box I will also include a small jar of soil from our garden. About the
size of a small jam jar. For Produit Rien, I can have audio and video (do you
have a projector?). Prints may be about 24" x12” x 3.

Mastering moolah

Hi Eric, I’m working on the sound for my Manual
project - the piece I will propose to ORAL for online release. As it wasn’t my
original intention, I hadn’t included any money to master it. Would you have
any funds for that? If not, it’s okay, but you have suggested you might have
some funds for expenses so I thought I would ask. I would get Giuseppe to do
it. He charges 200 € for a full length. I can work around if you don’t, really.
Just asking… Thanks.

Hi
Steve. Back home. Difficult to be trapped in town after experimenting vast
spaces. I meet with a friend of yours Ziad in an hour. He comes to pick up some
Monoton’s. Ian from Constellation bought yesterday the whole digital ORAL
catalog (oups!)
Tell
me: did you do your Home related Event ? How was it?
To
your question, I answer YES. I can pay that…. If you still think mastering is
appropriate when we let tracks go on the Net, please do it. Send me the Bill.
Follows
some ideas I compiled updated for your own participation. Just a resume of
what’s coming.
MONTREAL.
The audio will be part of a listing of Manual
tracks which will be played at Produit Rien from Sept 6 to 12 (11!), not sure
exactly yet about the sound system (headphones or room ?) You will be around
some days of that week:
are
you still into playing Live: if YES, I have to check with Karen & Paul how
it works for Sounds at their place. What kind of sound system will you need?
(they have none, I see). Would you like to make a presentation, or be part of a
kind of friendly panel ? May I receive the files to be printed, which sizes is it?
and instructions. I will print at ADC, old printer partner of mine beginning of
august, I guess,
I am
thinking about PRINTING cards for each project with links to the Internet
files.
all
audio tracks will also be accessed thru a headphone jack on a Raspberry Pi with
a screen installed in a knitting box I bought which I see as our Manual.
QUEBEC
: this box will be on display in Québec city at La Chambre Blanche for 3 days
end of September Is that OK with you? A diffusion fee will be available, amount will be determined by the various
interventions each artist may do these days. All the best to you. Keep me
updated on your project.

Oh
cool! Say hi to Ziad for me. Yeah, Ian bought the whole dim coast catalogue yesterday
as well. Nice.. The home event will happen July 26. I will
document it with sound and video and send to you these materials.
I
will send a couple of images to propose to you for the exhibition. If you can print,
there - fantastic. And then you can keep them! Playing live…I can do something
but also, fine to not. I am playing an improv show with Elizabeth on Sept. 2 as
part of Michaela’s vernissage at the cinematheque. I also just emailed Mauro
about doing a record release show at Casa Sept. 5, 6 or 7 so maybe better to
not play at Product Rien? Or I can do something really low key with my nice
bluetooth speaker, so you don’t have to worry about a PA? All of this sounds
good to me. I will send the images soon. Leaving for Winnipeg for two
weeks on Saturday. Will be there from 10-24. So much to do before then… Okay,
more soon…
xoxo

With Ziad it’s
cool. We haven’t met in person yet but have had a lot of correspondence.
The record
isn’t out yet, just announced yesterday with a first single/video.

Okay,
maybe we can do something interesting for a quick live set at Produit. Lets
talk more. I’m actually quiet happy with the bluetooth speaker. I used it a lot
in Greece.
Thanks,
re: 26th.
