hi Eric: pls let me know what you think of my previous emails, about the development of my project. here is my text (we need a proofreading before publishing in any way) (but pls keep all letters in lowercase): I’m in Lanzhou right now. i have left this home city since 1999. sometimes i even feel strange if I speak in the local dialect. the connection with local sound on the tongue is thin and twisted. but this city and its people are also changing, from every morning to every deep night. some of my friends are dead, some have changed their tracks radically, but most of them are just going on the way to middle age, bearing and enjoying a lot of family and social duties. the neighborhood has changed. eyes are changed. i am changed, too. wherever I am, there is a neighborhood surrounding, weaving and generating my feelings. maybe i can say it is defining me. some are familiar while some are not. with some i have more relationships while some less. as traveler, visitor, resident or wanderer i swim in the neighborhood. they are different when i am awake. i read it, analyze it, discover it but i have also a silent part which touches it and swallows it. that is a part my language comes from but not yet distinguished. that’s my body and that thinks less. walking a local street, eating some local food, hold hands of local people, these are not enough. I have to sleep on a local night, the nameless and meaningless body of local. i always think i talk too much. and i think in general people talk too much. the street shows itself when cars talk less. the night embraces us when we talk less. and we finally shared the same night. that’s the same neighborhood. maybe i can say the same body, in a way. theoretically, yes, when people fall asleep, they get rid of their ego. they are free from continuity (ok, partly) and individuality. have you ever dreamed that you are not alone? have you ever thought about a gigantic night that is shared by many people who are half-human? i care about the concept of half-human for a long time. it’s not a kind of entity. it’s rather like a statue. i will not extend too much here. any way it happens here when one is walk away from memory, home, strangers, language, ideology and so on… have you ever dreamed that you are dreaming with others, your neighbors? you can edit from the text i sent you. i can check it before your release. use my email is fine. plus, these details:
1, pls record as high quality as you can. use a portable recorder, or even professional equipment. or at least check the setting of your recording app and choose .wav format with higher sample rate and bit depth (48khz/16bit for instance). some apps may have more options than the others.
2, you can record and send a file as long/large as you like.
3, remember to provide location information. google maps can tell you your geographic coordinates. or just street and city name.
4, and tell us what time you started the recording.
5, contact the artist if you want to send a physical recording tape or disc. pls make it not like an official announcement before the map and page has done. we don’t know how long we will keep people wait after they send out the recording. All best

– the easiest way would be to use Aporee, as you know indicate Higher quality, it shouldn’t be a pb.

yes, if you feel in a hurry. the text is fine. i’m not in a hurry and i’m fine if you want to send now. i have thought about the map: 1, i will pay for a domain name, till forever. 2, both we build page or just project introductions on each website. link to this domain url. or link to Aporee (in this case the url will also link to Aporee anyway). 3, if we don’t use Aporee, the important idea is, we make the map very simple! 1st we put all recordings on bandcamp and/or SoundCloud; 2nd we embrace the track link to the independent site page (on my host, no need money); 3rd we don’t do map but only geographical coordinates to google map. i really don’t like to stop people who know no recording technology and have no proper recorder. dreams have no quality difference. i mean: why should we pay 3000 usd for such simple work? we don’t pay that even if we have the money. it’s immoral to spend so much money for such a project of equality. i can build such a simple site in 1 hour. then you spend 20 minutes to add url link to your website. then i spend 20 minutes each time to upload recording and add text and geographical coordinates. let me know how you think about a simple one page site: i do it.

And if it doesn’t really fit into it, feel free not to use it… I’m sure other places will sounds much better! Curious to listen to others’ sleeps! All best

HostPapa has 24 hours online chatting service. if problem is big then it will be forward to technical team. then talk through email, which is also quick (during daytime). i paid for business pro plan. so i can ask for doing many things. cheaper plan is also fine. once you learn how to use the panel (i read their online resource, and google), you can do most thing by yourself. for instance, installing WordPress in 5 minutes. WordPress is another thing to learn. thousands of free themes for how it looks. thousand plugins for how it functions. i become my own technician by using google.
if you don’t want search and learn from time to time, maybe there are site builders to hire. no coding needed. just use WordPress. must be cheap.

But i am « afraid » as long time ago i had a site on SAT, an institution i co-founded, for years my site was activated, i had help from technicians there. Now i am alone: tough here to find graphists, with COVID they have much work, and a site which did cost 4000 to launch less than 10 years ago may cost today 20 000.!! “Hi Eric, Barbara and I are working daily on the night music. We are recording one hour each night at different times and meet listening to it the next day, being curious about what was going on at night. We will continue some more days, now that we enjoy it so much. As you know, we are no sound artists, and it needed some technical tests to capture something. Attached are two short samples, one in a stormy night, and one in a night without much wind. One hour of recording is close to 700MB. Both attached samples were normalized = reaching 0db as maximal vol. This however you will not show in the samples, especially not in the quiet one. However, I suggest sending you the final file in the same vol as the samples. If you think these are too quiet, you could always amplify it. Barbara tends more to the quiet version, while I prefer the stormy one. If you want, you can have a full hour of each. We cannot judge if this makes sense to the listener. Who would want to hear an hour of it? On the other hand, a full hour brings you more realistic into the sleep situation than an edited version with ‘highlights’ from several nights. Your thoughts on this are welcome.”

i love both. maybe we use both. mark as “georg’s choice» and “barbara’s choice”. and i prefer the long length. if people have no time, then they will have time when listen to it. if they have no patience then they will have it after this experience. and for the quiet part i feel it’s loud enough. no need to amplify. i think it’s also good to include some text. or just part of the email as it simply explains how the recording comes. for instance: “Barbara and I are working daily on the night music. dear georg: i believe we are re-shaping the world all the time. but the result or the direction depends on how we understand it and how we re-shaping ourselves. that takes lifetime. about price, no it’s for free downloading. as there is no such a set up i made it as “at least 0” and it shows as “name your price”. that means you can choose to pay 0. that’s how we do for free stuff with bandcamp. sometimes people still pay for support (actually four happened for different sleeping recordings already). there is one support for your track for 7 euro. i have got 5.48 after bandcamp sharing. and then 5.43 euro when arrive in paypal. i’d do it half half. pls let me know how to transfer to you. it’s symbolic and symbolic is still important. all best. yan

TEXT: The soundscape is built long before humans wake up. I have discovered that a neighbor has chickens, I had never heard it with the daily noise of the neighborhood. uhm, I do think such a radio program in Manuel should be Live. what we did for the 2 last programs was: i prepared questions in advance for you to tell me if they are good, if we should add me others. Then the day of the radio show we do it live by zoom, with Martin who will translate (from French or English) to spanish, he is also the technician on my side. Also, you may have to tell me which sleepsongs we play for the program. For sure we can make it the way you say as well, but it sounds not as radiophonik when it’s not live, i guess. The problem for you then is the time zone… if we do 6 to 8 PM, it means midnight for you. Not sure it’s a good idea to do it now as you are in the middle of a nice festival. Would not be as well easy if we wait for you to be back to Beijing. What do you think. If we go for, may we have to set up a date alike the 19th of May?

many thanx！radio in the future… yes i might be able to send you something in the future. i mean to do something together, for a certain project i’m preparing with friends here in berlin. maybe next year we will be able to take trains from china to luxembourg. there is already a radio in luxembourg will work with this project. maybe we will produce many things like sound diary or sound postcards through it. spread sound through radio is a great thing. especially when traveling. we can talk about this later when we know more about it. the first things are the final funding and the permission to enter china. all best. yan

I was ready to pay high $ to Thomas to design a special box when I thought such Box when opened make the Job. I will print Postcards for each project to ne in the Box with other objects (Cat Collar by Martín Rodríguez, Bronze Bell by Caroline Gagné, Ceramic Rattle by Émilie Payeur, Sound Postcard by Vincent Thériault etc… Which image should we use to print.
